Jim Lowney Photograph Collection

 Collection
Identifier: MG Lowney-(Digital)

Scope and Contents

The majority of the photographs in this collection were taken in New Jersey and Newark. Jim Lowney is the presumed photographer of most of the photos.

Most of the photos span Lowney's time at the Newark Evening News (1958-1972), expect two: a 1984 photo of the state trooper murder on Route 33 and a photo of retired Newark News photographers, taken in 1974. Some of the photos taken during Lowney's time at the news have been traced to specific news articles

One group of photos shows Newark policemen and police cases, including policeman responding to accidents. Some of these photos are graphic in nature, showing injured or deceased civilians and police.

A second group of photos shows members and officials of the New Jersey Air National Guard, as well as scenes of planes. There is also a group of photos from the Newark Rebellion (Newark Riots), including a photo of Jim calling in a story to the News (photographer unknown).

A large portion of the photos show polticians and celebrities, generally on visits to Newark or New Jersey. These include Connie Francis, Ladybird Johnson, Adlai Stevenson, Richard and Pat Nixon and Barry Goldwater.

The remaining photos show miscellaneous scenes and news stories from Newark and New Jersey. Newark scenes include Kresge Department Store, Port Newark, and the Newark subway. New Jersey photos include important news stories like the birth of quintuplets in 1970 and a photograph of a letter which Louis Saperstein wrote to the FBI before his 1968 murder.

Also in the collection, is also a headshot of Jim, which appears to be taken after his time at the News, photographer unknown.

The only non-photograph item in this collection is a Aug 1962 letter to Henry Colt, managing editor of the News, from the chairman of the NPAA Monthly Newsphoto Clipping Contest. The letter states that Jim's photo had won the contest. The winning photo, of children being sprayed by a fire hydrant, is also part of this collection.
