Newark School Photographs
Scope and Contents
The collection is divided into two sections: file drawers (smaller prints and negatives) and boxes (larger prints). There is some duplication of images between the two sections, but researchers should consult both portions of the collection.
Drawers: The drawers of small photographs, mostly 3" x 5" black and white prints, are arranged numerically by index-number, from #1 to #6104 in four file drawers. The photographs are dated beginning with #1 (1942) through #6104 (1956). Negatives for most of the photographs are filed with the matching image. The photographs include images of schools, interior and exterior, and include classrooms, libraries, auditoriums, cafeterias, science labs, and playgrounds, among other images; students and teachers in classrooms; concerts, plays, pageants, dance performances, and other extracurricular activities; and exhibits and displays of student work. Not all the photographs are of Newark schools, students, staff, and faculty, however; some appear to have acquired for teaching purposes, for example a photograph of the Venus de Milo, #1093 (1942).
Boxes: The first nine boxes of larger-format black and white photographs are filed alphabetically by school name; additional boxes #10-13 contain files of photographs labeled by topic or school name, but not arranged in alphabetical order. Most of the individual prints have typed caption slips attached; others have caption information written on the back of the print. Many prints are not dated; the bulk appear to date from the 1920s to the 1950s. Some, but by no means all, of the prints have index numbers written on the back, keyed to the card-file index available in the Reading Room.
