Shopping Bag Collection

Abstract

This special collection was founded in 1970 due to tremendous popular public interest in shopping bags in the 1960s. Shopping bags are frequently referred to as “portable art.” They originate from leading commercial firms, shopping malls, deluxe retail stores, and all sorts of merchandising outlets in the United States, and from stores all over the world. The collection contains over 2,000 bags.

Sigfredo Carrion Papers

Abstract

Sigfredo Carrion attended Rutgers – Newark, where he co-founded the student organization, Puerto Rican Organization (P.R.O.). He was actively involved as a community activist in Newark, where he served on the People’s Committee, one of the negotiation committees that met with Mayor Gibson at the on-set of the 1974 Newark Puerto Rican riots. The collection consists of 14 photographs of ASPIRA’s lead poisoning screening campaign and clothing drive in 1971.
