Scope and Contents
This collection contains two Princeton University student-run newsletters from the late 19th century: The Princetonian and The Nassau Literary Magazine. The Princetonian is a newspaper that includes primarily editorials and news about Princeton University and its students. The Nassau Literary Magazine includes primarily literary contributions by students (e.g., essays and poetry), as well as editorials and news related to Princeton University.
This collection is organized in two series:
Series I: Princetonian, 1876-1884
Series I includes five bound volumes of The Princetonian from the late 19th century, each containing between 14 and 32 issues. Volume 1 is missing issue No. 1. The student-run newsletter includes editorials, personals, news, and other student contributions related to Princeton, such as student life, athletics, commencement, and student organizations.
Series II: Nassau Literary Magazine, 1859-1903
Series II contains seven volumes of The Nassau Literary Magazine from the late 19th century, each containing between five and nine issues. The student-run magazine primarily includes essays, stories, and poetry. It also includes literary gossip, orations, sketches, and editorials related to Princeton College, as well as student organizations and professor obituaries. Advertisements, supplementary event listings, and sports listings are included at the end of each issue.

Biographical / Historical
The Princetonian and The Nassau Literary Magazine both started in the 19th century, making them the two oldest student publications at Princeton University. The Princetonian (now known as The Daily Princetonian) started in 1876 and is the second oldest daily college newspaper in the United States. It includes primarily editorials and news about Princeton University and its students. This newspaper began as a bi-weekly publication, soon increasing to tri-weekly, and eventually becoming a daily newspaper. The Nassau Literary Magazine (now known as The Nassau Literary Review) started as a magazine conducted by the senior class of Princeton College in 1842, making it the oldest student publication at Princeton University and the second oldest undergraduate literary magazine in the United States. It includes primarily literary contributions by students, editorials, and news related to Princeton University.
