Downtown Newark Photographs Collection
Scope and Contents
These photos document a visit to Jeff Vanderbeek's office in the National Newark Building (744 Broad). These photos are a valuable portrait of downtown Newark in 2006.
The unknown photographer took photos of the Devil's office including models of Prudential Arena, sample seats, and hockey jerseys. They then took shots out the window of the 33rd floor office in all directions, which show the Prudential arena under construction as well as Newark landmarks including NJPAC, Hahne's, Rutgers, First Presbyterian Church, the Military Park Building and 1180 Raymond Blvd. The photographer also took photos of Broad Street and the National Newark building from street level.
Since the National Newark building is the tallest in Newark, the photographer was able to get detailed panoramic shots including images of the tops of the Military Park Building and 1180 Raymond Blvd, two of Newark's former tallest buildings.

Biographical / Historical
The 35-floor National Newark building, at 744 Broad, was built in 1931 and was the tallest in New Jersey until 1989. It is still the tallest building in Newark.
Prudential Arena was constructed between 2005 and 2007. By 2005, Jeff Vanderbeek, the main owner, had an office on the 33rd floor of the National Newark Building, which he used as a sales office. This office contained models of the future arena, as well as a model of the bar and other items. Prudential Arena opened in 2007. The building of the arena, championed by Mayor James and other officials, signified a large investment in downtown Newark.
