This Collection is organized in 3 Series

Series I: Newark Public Schools
Series I includes photos of Newark Public Schools that William May took while working for the district. Schools include: Weequahic, Vailsburg, Peshine Avenue, Newton, Science High, West Side, and Arts. Subseries I contains physical photographs. Subseries II contains digital media materials including CD's, floppy disks, DVD's and Mini DV tapes.

Series II: Krueger Scott Oral History Portraits
Series II includes portraits taken by William May in 1996 of Newark interviewees of the Krueger Scott Oral History project.

Series III: Born Digital Materials
Series III includes born digital materials including photos of Newark Public Schools, as well as historical research on the schools, Newark African Americans, Newark politicians, New Jersey Jazz musicians, oral history interviews, videos and audio from Newark Public Schools.

Biographical / Historical

William W. May, known as Bill May, has been photographing the world's most famous jazz musicians for decades. He also taught music to children in Newark for forty years and retired as the district's Director of Visual and Performing Arts. He nows works as a arts and education Consultant, musician and photographer with William W. May Inc.
