Scope and Contents From NJHS: John Stevens (ca. 1682-1737) was the founder of the Stevens family in New Jersey. His son, generally known as Hon. John Stevens (1715-1792), grew to prominence as a sea captain and merchant, a member of the New Jersey Assembly and later of the Continental Congress. As a member of the Board of General Proprietors of the Eastern Division of New Jersey, and its president in 1783, Hon. John Stevens was involved in land speculation.
