Scope and Contents

This collection contains copies of the Three Rings newspaper dating from 1959 to 1964. Three Rings was produced by the P. Ballantine and Sons Brewing Company as an employee newsletter that provided information and updates about the company, their employees, and the industry. The publication includes articles and photographs pertaining to the Ballantine company, their employees, the brewing industry, and Ballantine events and facilities, with a focus on the geographic areas of Newark, New Jersey and New York City. The newspaper features the employee bowling league as well as other employee clubs and events, tv shows sponsored by the company, charity work and philanthropy. It also includes announcements of promotions and service awards, updates on births, marriages, death, and retirements of employees and their family members, information on new advertising campaigns, industry news, and updates on construction and improvements at the company’s productions facilities.

Biographical / Historical

The P. Ballantine and Sons Brewing Company was founded in Newark, New Jersey in 1845. The company produced beer and ale, as well as malt syrup and other alcoholic drinks. Their products were popular nationwide, and at their peak the company employed over 4,000 people and was an integral component of the local economy in Newark. In 1940, they began producing a newspaper for employees, titled Three Rings: The Ballantine Newspaper, which was printed almost every month until at least 1964. In 1972, after declining sales, the company was sold and the brewery closed.

This collection contains copies of the Three Rings newspaper, which was published by and for the employees of the P. Ballantine and Sons Brewing Company in Newark, New Jersey.

Processing Information

The newspapers were originally bound together and were stored with the NJ Oversized Collection. The time of donation and donor are unknown. In 2025, the plastic binding was removed from the papers and the papers were scanned. They were processed into their own collection in 2026.
