Biographical / Historical
Jamara Wakefield, born in Boston, is a Black queer writer, creator, performer and activist. Her work has been published in many national publications including Shondaland, Playboy, Broadway Black, The Indypendant, Felt, Deluge, Bitch Magazine and Broadway World. Jamara is an alumna of Tisch School of the Arts, The New School, and Pratt Institute. Recently, Jamara has worked as Digital Content Manager for WBGO and leads a production company In the Wake.
For WBGO, Jamara hosts the podcast "Black House, Black Joy" covering the history and evolution of the Black New Jersey House Music Community. She is now working on a documentary film on the topic. This collection consists of video and audio files from interviews Jamara has done throughout the process.
