Biographical / Historical

The first federal housing projects in Newark, providing low-income housing for poor residents, were approved in 1938. Building continued through the 1959-1960 year when Scudder Homes and Stella Wright opened.

Between 1952 and 1967 there were 17 urban renewal projects in Newark. This caused conflict in 1966 and 1967 when a medical school and urban renewal threatened the homes of many residents. Some say that anger of the medical school fight was a factor in the 1967 Newark Rebellion.

In the 1980s and 1990s Newark tore down many housing project buildings, with housing projects continued to be emptied and torn down to this day.
