Newspaper Photos of Newark's Past: Scrapbooks
Scope and Contents
2 scrapbooks contain photographs related to the City of Newark (N.J.), published between 1890 and 1938 in local newspapers.
The images are not arranged chronologically but are grouped by general topic, or for artistic effect. In most cases the photographers are not identified, but some photographs are credited as the work of Harry C. Dorer. In addition to photographic images there are some reproduced sketches, engravings, and other art work with imaginative portrayals of early Newark.
Subjects include, but are not limited to: historic homes and other buildings, street scenes, storefronts, monuments, trolleys and trains, politicians and dignitaries, civic events, class photos and faculty groups, military groups, groups of businessmen and workers, firefighters and fire engines, parks, baseball teams and other sports images, bicycle clubs, auto races, and group photos of clubs and societies.
A few clippings are of articles, some relating to the 1936 Newark Centennial, and text images (election notices, advertisements, etc.). Also present (in Volume 1) are a few glossy prints, most of them of models depicting scenes of early Newark (including the arrival of Abraham Lincoln in 1861), "courtesy of the New Jersey Historical Society."

Abstract
The collection consists of two scrapbooks compiled by Walter Edward Blythe and Robert Arthur Illig. They contain illustrations relating to the history of Newark, clipped from local newspapers (the Newark Sunday Call, the Newark Evening News, the Newark Star-Eagle, etc.). The illustrations, cut out and neatly mounted on scrapbook pages, are annotated with the date of publication. The publication dates are mostly in the 1920s and 1930s, but many of the graphics and photographs reproduced date from the 19th century and the early years of the twentieth.
