Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This small collection consists of an eclectic mix of Newark-related documents, photographs and ephemera amassed by Donald Karp, a history buff and long-time Newark booster, who spent the bulk of his career as an attorney and banker in Newark.

The collection includes reports, brochures and other publications regarding city planning, housing, and urban and economic renewal as related to Newark.

Also in the collection are flyers, programs, publications, ephemera, photographs, maps and prints related to Newark’s history including, among other items, such as:

The 1947 centennial yearbook for the Newark Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, Local #3, which lists names of boosters by precinct, district and other categories. The names of the boosters include captains, lieutenants, and sergeants, as well as patrolmen; and judges and courts officials among others. Also included in the yearbook are the names of the officers of the association and a brief history of the police in Newark.

A 1918 race-day program for the Newark Velodrome amateur and professional championship that lists qualifiers, by city and state or country, for the various races. Many of the racers were Newarkers, but racers came from around the country and as far away as Australia. The race-day program includes pencilled annotations, which list the winners, and their times, for each race.

Programs for Robbie’s School of Music (1949, 1955) that include names and photographs of individual students, many of whom appear with their accordions.
