Biographical / Historical

A commission to investigate NJ laws was first created in 1925, becoming the Commission on Statutes in 1939, the Law Revision and Bill Drafting Commission Law Revision in 1944.

In 1954, the Law Revision and Bill Drafting Commission was converted into the Legislative Services Agency, under the Law Revision and Legislative Services Commission. The Legislative Services Agency had three divisions: Bill Drafting and Legal Services, Law Revision and Legislative Information and Research.

The Office of Fiscal Affairs was created in 1971 to provide fiscal, budgetary analysis and service. This was also created under the Law Revision and Legislative Services Commission.

In 1979 the New Jersey Legislative Services Agency and the Office of Fiscal Affairs, the two divisions of the Law Revision and Legislative Services Commission, merged to form the Office of Legislative Services, which continues to be governed by the Commission.

The State Auditor also reports to the Legislature and early auditor tabulation of debts, and one annual report, are also in this record group.
