Biographical / Historical

In 1932, Associated Hospitals provided the first multi-hospital service plan for NJ. It went statewide in 1936 as the Hospital Service Plan. In 1942 the Medical-Surgical Plan of New Jersey was incorporated. In 1960, legislation was passed to allow the State Employees Health Insurance Commission to purchase from Blue Cross, Blue Shield, which was enacted in 1964. Blue Cross of NJ and Blue Shield of NJ merged in 1986, and in 1998 became Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey.
