Biographical / Historical

The name of the department encompassing parks and recreation changed over the years. The term "Parks and Public Property" was used until 1953, when the government was reorganized the Bureau of Parks and Grounds was created in the Department of Public Works.

The "Recreation and Parks" department existed by 1972. In 1986, the Health and Human Services Department was created to encompass the previouis Recreation and Parks Dept, as well as Health and Welfare. At this point, the newly formed division was called "Recreation and Cultural Affairs".

In 1994, the Department of Neighborhood Services was established with a "Division of Recreation and Cultural Affairs" and a "Division of Parks, Grounds and Shade Trees". In 1998, the department was renamed Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services.

In 2016, Ordinance 6PSF-F created the "Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Senior Services", and the "Division of Parks, Grounds and Shade Trees" was moved to Public Works.
