Abstract

Materials donated to the Philip Roth Personal Library at The Newark Public Library since 2018. This smaller collection augments the Philip Roth Collection and the Joel Conarroe Collection of Philip Roth Material. Included are photographs, programs, and a donation of letters from Roth to his summer romance, Micki Ruttenberg Auerbach, when Roth was in college.

Abstract

"My decision to locate my personal library in Newark, and specifically in the Newark Public Library, was determined by a longstanding sense of gratitude to the city where I was born in 1933." – Philip Roth. Roth's gift of over 7,000 books is one of the largest personal collections to be donated to a public library. The bequest also includes awards given to Roth, honorary diplomas, furniture, and personal effects.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of exhibit materials from the 2013 Philip Roth exhibit. It consists of photographs, notes, and articles. There are also several mounted photographs and 10 CDs containing photos of Philip Roth.

The exhibit on Philip Roth was on display in 2013 from March 19 through August 31. It was curated by James Lewis and Rosemary Steinbaum.
