Abstract

Materials donated to the Philip Roth Personal Library at The Newark Public Library since 2018. This smaller collection augments the Philip Roth Collection and the Joel Conarroe Collection of Philip Roth Material. Included are photographs, programs, and a donation of letters from Roth to his summer romance, Micki Ruttenberg Auerbach, when Roth was in college.

Abstract

“My decision to locate my personal library in Newark, and specifically in the Newark Public Library, was determined by a longstanding sense of gratitude to the city where I was born in 1933.” – Philip Roth. Roth's gift of over 7,000 books is one of the largest personal collections to be donated to a public library. The bequest also includes awards given to Roth, honorary diplomas, furniture, and personal effects.

The Joel Conarroe Collection of Philip Roth Material

Abstract This collection consists primarily of photocopies of draft manuscripts — written by American writer Philip Roth — which Roth sent to his long-time friend Joel Conarroe over the course of 26 years. Many of the drafts were heavily edited by Roth. Some of the drafts include a few comments, questions or edits by Conarroe.
