Amilkar Velez-Lopez Papers
Abstract
Judge, attorney, social worker, and community activist. The collection documents Amilkar Velez-Lopez‘s personal life and career as a Municipal Court Judge of Newark, New Jersey. Velez-Lopez became a founding member for La Casa de Don Pedro, the New York Association of Puerto Rican Social Service Workers, and the Newark Borinquen Lions Club. He was also an active member of the Puerto Rican Educators Association (PREA). Velez-Lopez was appointed as Municipal Court Judge by Mayor Sharpe James in 2000 and was reappointed in 2006. Judge Velez-Lopez retired in 2011 after 11 years as a judge, 21 years as attorney in practice, 31 years as a social worker, and a life-long community organizer. The papers consist of his biographical and personal life, community service and organizations, flyers, law and politics, newspaper clippings and research, photographs, programs, Puerto Rico, and school and social work. Portions of this collection have been digitized.
