Michael Fernandez Papers
Abstract
Michael Fernandez, a Rutgers graduate and Ph.D. candidate in comparative labor history, studied the immigration patterns of Puerto Ricans, specifically those who moved to Perth Amboy, New Jersey, for his doctoral dissertation. Michael Fernandez’s work includes the migration and labor of Puerto Ricans in Perth Amboy, NJ and the many challenges faced in order to incorporate to their new surroundings. His research covers the various issues any new migrant community faces upon entrance to an unfamiliar society: such as economic development, employment, poverty, health and welfare, housing and acculturation to name a few. The struggle for acceptance, adjustment, justice and progress are depicted in his drafts. An interview of Michael Fernandez is available in the Latino Oral History Collection: Latino Life Stories.
