ASPIRA // Statewide Youth Conference, Undated
Scope and Contents
This subseries contains 96 pin-back buttons; 94 of which are unique, two of which are duplicates (the Junius Williams Campaign Button and the United Nations’ 1975 Year of Women Button). The buttons in this subseries are the product of numerous activities and campaigns that Dr. Hidalgo was involved in or supported. There are also buttons that reflect Dr. Hidalgo’s sense of humor, social issues she was passionate about, and even musicians who she enjoyed, like Bob Marley. Of note are the badges she received while serving as a delegate to the 1976 Democratic National Convention, the very rare pin back button supporting the Young Lords, and a pin from the ACT UP campaign to raise AIDS/HIV awareness with their “Silence = Death” Campaign. A complete inventory of the button collection, including digital photographs of the items and brief notes on their provenance may be found in the document, Appendix B: Hilda A. Hidalgo, PhD Button Collection.
In Appendix B, each of the buttons are tagged with the subject topic(s) they represent. The most common subject tags are: social justice, LGBT advocacy, feminism, Latino advocacy, civil rights, and community activism. See below for a complete list of the buttons’ subject tags and the number of buttons the subject tags represent.
