Ladies' Home Journal, July 1984, 1984
Scope and Contents
This series contains information about the personal history and life of Dr. Hilda Hidalgo. In this series, a number of biographical pieces from various publications are found. There is also biographical information on family members and on Dr. Hidalgo’s first partner, Joan McEniry, which is found in the materials planning her memorial service. Of particular note are the folders of “Newspaper Clippings” which document some major events in Dr. Hidalgo’s life, such as when her car was fire-bombed, allegedly by racists, her involvement with the Girl Scouts, and her involvement with the civil rights movement in Newark. Additionally, this series contains numerous photographs of Dr. Hidalgo, her friends, and her family. The earliest photographs are tentatively dated to the 1920s and are of Dr. Hidalgo’s parents. There are also groups of photographs documenting Dr. Hidalgo’s time as a nun in the convent of the Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity; her time working with the Girl Scouts; her run for Essex County freeholder, including a picture with Representative Hermán Badillo; and her participation in 1986 in the National Puerto Rican March for Justice in Washington, DC. The photographs are arranged by size then chronologically.
This series also contains four subseries: Subseries II. A: Scrapbooks and Photograph Albums (1960 – 1998, undated); Subseries II. B: Degrees, Awards and Honors (1966 – 2010, undated); Subseries II. C: State of New Jersey v. Hilda Hidalgo (1992 – 1995, undated); and Subseries II. D: A Celebration of Life: Hilda A. Hidalgo, PhD (2009 – 2010).
