Scope and Contents
During her tenure as Assistant Commissioner of Education for the State of New Jersey, Dr. Hidalgo was part of a team assigned to evaluate the Newark Public School System. While investigating conditions at the Morton Street School with other members of the Department of Education and members of the press, Dr. Hidalgo was arrested. The documents in this subseries contain a partial trial transcript, newspaper clippings documenting the case from her initial arrest to the end of the trial and the subsequent appeals, support cards from members of the community, and correspondence regarding the arrest and trial. A photograph of the stairwell in the Morton Street School where the confrontation took place is also located in this subseries.
