Atlantus Project Collection

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: MG NJ Atlantus-(Offsite)

Scope and Contents

For the exhibition in 2016, a “multi-functional newspaper” of 80 pages was produced, in five sections: Atlantus, The Atlantic World, Precious Galinthia, Portraits and The Transoceanic Journey. The collection is composed of these newspapers, which can be folded out into an exhibition style display. The newspapers, which pertain to the Isle of Jersey and New Jersey, include photos with captions and historical contextualization from the 2014 photography project. The subject matter includes the history, geography, and modern culture of these two locations. In the words of the project description, Atlantus “asks how two places that share a name on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean perceive each other within archives and cultural memory.”

Biographical / Historical

The project originated on the Isle of Jersey, as an exhibition by photographers Martin Toft and Gareth Syvret at Archisle: The Jersey Contemporary Photography Programme. The project was on show in the exhibit area of the New Jersey State Archives building in Trenton in 2016. It opened on New Jersey Day, June 24.
