Biographical / Historical
Founded in 2002 by historians Warren Grover, Charles F. Cummings, and Timothy J. Crist, the Newark History Society organizes regular public programs, encourages new research, and sponsors the Newark Archives Project. The aim of the society is to “expand knowledge of Newark’s past so that we may better understand the present.” Initially, most of the society’s programs were paid events, with admission including dinner and membership in the Newark History Society. Since 2006, their programs have been free and open to the public. These programs are usually held at NJPAC, the New Jersey Historical Society, and the Newark Public Library. Programs since 2008 have been recorded and posted on the Newark History Society’s YouTube channel as well as on DVD in the NJ Reference collection.
