Biographical / Historical
Bertha Stumpf (1870-1961), a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Newark, New Jersey, created this scrapbook in 1934. Stumpf’s husband, Frederick Kilgus (1852-1932), a member of the church who erected a new location at Avon Avenue and S 10th St in 1910. The old church was located on Halsey St., opposite Cedar St from 1860 to 1910. Born in Germany, Fred Kilgus arrived in the United States in 1869 and resided in Newark until his passing. He was President of the Church Council from 1908 to 1932. Frederick and Bertha Kilgus were married by a pastor of the church in 1897. As of the creation of this scrapbook in 1934, the church had 848 members.
