Biographical / Historical

The Whim was a periodical published from 1901 to 1905, described by the editors as the “official organ of the Grand Order of Whimsical Folk.” The periodical includes original articles as well as occasional translated or edited versions of previously published writings. Issues of The Whim do not note the names of editors, except when a regular contributor to the periodical named Ernest Crosby joined the editorial team in 1902. Benedict Prieth is also noted as an editor in later issues. The periodical was published in Newark, initially at 26 Campbell St. and later at 75 Market St. Most contributors lived in or around Newark, N.J., and their contributions varied, ranging from whimsical advertisements to serious writings on topics such as modern Christianity and socialism. An issue from Volume 1 tells potential contributors to “remember that you cannot be too odd and unconventional.” The beginning and end of each issue also feature various advertisements for businesses and publishers both in New Jersey and across the country.
