Biographical / Historical
The Newark Community Project for People with AIDS, incorporated in 1988, was a non-profit corporation organized to foster the humane treatment and care of people with AIDS and ARC. Officers listed in the 1989 by-laws included Derek Winans and Wanda Vanoy, co-chairs, Ed Szmitkowski, Secretary, and Curtis Ducksworth, Treasurer. Among the early supporters of the organization were Councilman Donald Tucker (chair of the Newark Advisory Committee on AIDS), Charles F. Cummings of the Newark Public Library, James Credle (Dean of Minority Affairs at Rutgers University-Newark), Rev. Buster Soaries of Shiloh Baptist Church, Trenton, Mildred Crump, Dr. Johnson W. Alexander, Senator Wynona Lipman, Richard Powell (AIDS Coordinator for the City of Newark), and others. The Project's Mission Statement listed its purposes as AIDS education in the community; decreasing the isolation of AIDS patients; fundraising for legal assistance, rent, food, and other patient needs; and AIDS prevention efforts. The organization eventually created a number of task forces that cooperated closely with other city and state bodies to address these issues.
