Biographical / Historical
Alvin D Schaffer (1922-2013) of Newark graduated from South Side High School and the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. Alvin lived on Osborne Terrace in 1930 with his parents Max and Lee and his older sister Evelyn. His parents were born in Austria and Romania.
Alvin married Anita Baurer (ca. 1925-2021), also of Newark and a graduate of Weequahic High School, in 1945, after Alvin’s service in World War II. Anita lived on Keer Ave. as of 1940, with her parents Sophie (nee Press) and Ben Baurer, and a brother, also Ben. Anita's grandparents, Isac (Israel) and Elka (Lena) Baurer, were born in Austria. They were heavily involved in Newark City Lodge, Brith Abraham. Both the Schaffer and Bauerer families were Jewish. The Schaffers eventually lived at 82 Lowell Ave in West Orange, NJ.
Alvin served for many years as a Republican Committeeman of Essex County. In 1961, after five years with the company, he was appointed VP and General Manager of the Rowe Manufacturing Co. (vending machines) of Whippany, NJ, a division of AC Automatic Manufacturing. In 1967 the Rowe company acquired Triangle Conduit and Cable, Inc. of 550 Broad St. He was promoted to VP for Corporate Planning of the Rowe Co. in 1968. By 1971 Alvin went on to become VP of manufacturing for Triangle Conduit and Cable Inc., in New Brunswick NJ. He went on to work for Blaustein Company (oil) of Boston.
The Baurers had two sons Richard and Dean. Richard Lance Schaffer married Katherine Hawes Lindsay, the daughter of Mayor John Lindsay of NYC, on June 6, 1970. The couple had met as students at the University of Pennsylvania.
