Scope and Contents

The scrapbooks in this collection mainly contain articles about Newark history from the 1920s-1930s. The cards seem to be written to Mr. and Mrs. Gould on the occasion of their 50th anniversary with misc. other cards. The birthday book contains members of the Gould / Coddington families.

There are no access restrictions on this collection, however photocopying of materials is limited and no materials may be photocopied without permission from library staff

Biographical / Historical

Anna Shick (1868-1945), was born to to William, who made saddle hardware, and Magdelena Shick in 1868. She was living on Charlton Street in Newark by 1880 with her parents and siblings.

Frank Elmer Gould (1867-?) was born in Newark to Jeptha (a tobacco maker) and Henrietta. In 1880, he lived on High Street with his parents and brother.

Anna and Frank married on Mar 3, 1892 in Newark. They had three children Nettie (1893-1987), Clara (1896-1971) and Harold (1908-1988). The family lived on Parker and Garside Streets.

Clara Mae Gould married Charles Coddington on April 23, 1918 and they would eventually move to Morris County and Parsippany. This collection comes from the family of Charles.

Clara's parents Anna (nee Shick) and Frank Gould celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1942.

Processing Information

Material in bad condition, crumbling. Originally contained two scrapbooks. Folder 3 contains one scrapbook with cover. A larger scrapbook was coming apart so cover was removed. This material is in folders 2 and 5.

Material is arranged roughly by date, with Newark-related material coming first.
