Biographical / Historical

Photographer Harry G. Potter (1880-1963) lived in Newark from childhood. As a youth he internned in New York with Norman Paulzer. Then he went into business for himself and opened a studio on Broad Street near City Hall at #839. He photographed many important political and business figures. Charles Cummings writes that Potter was "particulary interested in social history". He did photography for Grace Church and Hahne's, along with many other Newark landmarks.

He married Norma Whitfield and they had a son and two daughters. He lived in Newark until his retirement in 1953. He was active in the Professional Photographer's Association of NJ (secretary in 1911).

Image of his studio in 1909 can be found from Bobby Cole: https://i.redd.it/lh4fe2hl0yz31.jpg
