Scope and Contents

1.) typed transcripts listing African Americans from Newark City Directories (1869-1889), including listings of African-American churches, with their addresses and the names of pastors; listings of African-American schools, with their addresses and names of principals, and teachers; and listings of African-American residents of Newark, with addresses and occupations

2.) a typed transcript of the Newark Negro Directory (1889) with content similar to that of the Newark City Directories

3.) a typed copy of an 1818 list of the officers and 8 assistants of the Africa Society of Newark, whose purpose was to contribute funds to the African School established by the Synod of New York and New Jersey. Officers of the Society were President Adam Ray, Vice President David Ray, Secretary Thomas Gummaugh, and Treasurer Peter Petit. John O'Fake was among the eight "assistants."
