Biographical / Historical

NJT was founded on July 17, 1979, an offspring of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). ] It came into being with the passage of the Public Transportation Act of 1979 to "acquire, operate, and contract for transportation service in the public interest."

NJ Transit acquired the majority of the state's bus services, including those previously run by PSE&G, and then rail services in 1983. In the 1990s, the rail system was expanded and in 2001 a new station was opened at Newark Airport.
