 Collection
Identifier: MG NJ Postcards-(Main)

Scope and Contents

The nineteen catalogued albums in this collection contain postcards of New Jersey towns collected by Mr. K. Landsberger of Verona. The cards are arranged geographically, with two albums devoted to Verona, two to West Orange, and smaller numbers representing other locales. One album, "Scrapbook 19 - Newark," contains over 200 postcards of Newark, arranged roughly by subject. Most of the cards date from the first two decades of the 20th century and... most are photochrom (or photochrome) -- that is, mechanically colorized -- images; The latest postcards, and they are few in number, appear to be from the 1970s or 1980s. Roughly one third of the cards have messages written on them. The largest single group, more than 50 cards, consists of views of Branch Brook Park, in all seasons. Other images include, but are not limited to: street scenes, especially of Broad and Market Streets, which include buildings (many smaller ones with painted advertisements), trolleys, cars, pedestrians and a few horse-drawn vehicles; prominent buildings, including the Metropolitan Block; the Music Hall on Market Street (ca. 1909); the Industrial Building; Newark Theatre; Centre Market; Kearney Homestead; Newark Orphan Asylum; Newark Arcade; the YMCA; the Kinney Building; the Mutual Life Building; the Prudential Building; Firemen's Insurance Co.
