Krueger Brewery Collection

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MG Nwk Krueger-(Offsite)

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of miscellaneous items discovered by John N. Ioannou, a carpenter from Madison, NJ, at the site of a demolition on Belmont Avenue, "near the old Krueger Brewery." According to an undated note from him to Charles F. Cummings, he donated them to the Newark Public Library. The collection consists of material apparently gathered and buried or hidden on the occasion of the groundbreaking for a new stable for the Krueger Brewery, May 18, 1880. One large document consists of three items pasted together: an engraving of the Gottfried Kreuger Brewery; a two-page printed history of the brewery taken from a book (pp. 183-184); and a handwritten proclamation or statement headed "In Memoriam," describing the groundbreaking and giving details of the Krueger Family. Smaller items in the collection are: business cards of Charles Krueger ("Brewery Saloon," Belmont Ave.), Marshall & Ball and Ramsberger and Hotz (Builders, Belmont Ave.); an envelope bearing an engraving of the Krueger Brewery; a letter, in German, headed "Newark, May ... 1880" and signed by Henry [??] of Krueger's Brewery (torn and badly damaged); and three items of paper currency, 25 cents and 10 cents. Also included are several issues of German-language newspapers, published in New York and New Jersey and all dated May 1880, and an issue of the Newark Morning Register for May 24.
