Scope and Contents

This collection consists of one ledger kept by the City of Newark, which contains employee records. Each two-page spread is lined and pre-printed with column headings for Name, Position, Salary per year, Salary per month, When Appointed, How Appointed, Term of Office, Salary Increase, Sworn, and Remarks. The name of the relevant City Hall department is written in red in a very clear secretarial hand at the top of the left page. The ledger is organized in sections by year (1907, 1908, 1909, 1911, and 1913). Employees are listed for the office of the Mayor, Comptroller, Auditor, Treasurer, and City Clerk, as well as the following departments: Law, City Experts (This office disappeared by 1913), Weights & Measurements, Building(s), Receiver of the Taxes, Board of Assessment and Receiver of the Taxes, Centre Market (later Market Clerks, including the Market Clerk and several policemen and sweepers), License Inspector, Smoke Inspectors and Inspector of Gas and Gas Meters. Other sections of government with lists of employees in the ledger include the Overseer of the Poor, Alms House, Board of Excise Commissioners, City Hall Employees (includes six elevator attendants), Commissioners of Assessment, Aldermen, and Criminal Courts.
