Scope and Contents

This collection includes documents from the government of Essex. This open collection consists of documents issued by various bodies related to the government of Essex County. The files are arranged alphabetically by the name of the issuing bodies.

They include the Board of Chosen Freeholds, the County Executive, historical departments of Essex County including the medical examiner, finance, parks, engineer, etc. This section includes non-departmental agencies: Essex County College, the Taxations Board, the Vocational Schools, the County Superintendent and the Board of Elections. It also incldues consititonal and judicial officers of Essex County: the sheriff, the prosecuter's office, the Register of Deeds and Mortgages and the County Clerk.

Biographical / Historical

The goverment of Essex County is divided into departments and non-departmental agencies. Current departments are Administration and Finance; Health and Rehabilitation; Citizen Services; Law; Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs; Economic Development, Training and Employment; Corrections; and Public Works. Non departmental agencies include Essex County College, Couny College Board of school Estimate, The Board of Elections and Superintendent of Elections, the Improvement Authority, The County Vocational Schools, the Board of School Estimate of the County Vocational Schools, and the County Superintendent of Schools. Consitutional and judicial officers and considered a non-departmental agency. Consitutional officers include: The County Prosecutor, Sheriff, Surrogate, Clerk and Register of Deeds and Mortgages. The County-level courts, surrogate, probation officers and jury commissioners are judicial officers.

The County is governed by a 9-member County Commissioners (previously Board of Chosen Freeholders) and the County Executive, with the help of the County Administrator.
