New Jersey Author Awards, 1961 - 1980
Scope and Contents
Herman A. Estrin (1915-1999) joined the New Jersey Institute of Technology (then the Newark College of Engineering) as an instructor in English in 1946; by his retirement in 1981, he had been Chair of the Humanities Department for 13 years, and was a full professor. Estrin served as president of the New Jersey Council of Teachers of English, and founded the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame.
This subseries consists primarily of material related to New Jersey author awards presented annually by the New Jersey Council of Teachers of English. The correspondence, to and from Estrin, includes at least one letter from each of the following authors or scholars: Svetlana Alliluyeva, John Ciardi, M. Jean Craig, George Kennan, John McPhee, Philip Roth (who questioned honorable mention), Gay Talese, and John Unterecker.
