Biographical / Historical

Advocates for Children of New Jersey states that it "grew out of some of the earliest efforts in New Jersey to protect abused and abandoned children and is part of an evolution that began in 1847, when the Newark Orphan Asylum was established. Other organizations in our history included the Protestant Foster Home Society, Boys Lodging Home and the Home for the Friendless."

In 1948 the Newark Orphan Asluym merged with the Protestant Foster Home to form the Home for Foster Care.

In 1960, the Home for Foster Care (previously Protestant Foster Home and Newark Orphan Asylum, which had merged in 1948) merged with the Children's Aid Society and became Newark Child Service Association.

In 1970, the Child Service Association merged with the Citizens Committee for Children and became the Advocates for Children of New Jersey which still exists today.
