Scope and Contents

The bulk of this box consists of letters from Pfaltz to his family in Newark during 1918 and 1919. These letters were used as the basis of the book A Brush with History: Letters Home 1918-1919.

Also in this box is a folder of photographs. These include one of Pfaltz alone in his uniform, plus Pfaltz with other members of his unit in France, and a photo of Washington Park in Newark.

A folder of postcards includes scenes of battlefields during World War I.

Other items in this box include Pfaltz's 1917 draft notice, a guide to the letters, some official citations from the United States government, a published photo album from Pfaltz's military training, and some newspaper articles.

The folder entitled "Other Material" includes a pamphlet from the Veterans Educational Association and items about the 78th Infantry Division.
