Scope and Contents

This artificial collection consists of a variety of materials relating to public, private, and religious schools in Newark.

Box #1: Newark Public Schools Ledger (1904-13), Newark High Schools Scrapbook (1903-07, newspaper articles, typed reports, etc.). A ledger with inventories of sewing supplies by school, including the colored school (1904-1913); and a scrapbook of material relating to Newark's Board of Trade and schools, with reports on students in commercial courses and manual training programs; and clippings on school construction, manual training courses, etc. in Newark, and other cities (1903-1907).

Box #2: Chemistry & Physics Highschool (Board of Education, Newark, 1901); Language Third Year - First Half, Primary Schools (Board of Education, Newark, ca. 1901). Two volumes of student-generated material from the Newark Education Exhibit at the Pan-American Exposition of 1901. Each batch of student work is preceded by a teacher's statement with details on the class, the number of students whose work was exhibited, and additional notes such as the information that many students in one class were foreign born. The "Language, Third Year-First Half, Primary Schools" volume contains student essays and poems illustrated with line drawings, silhouettes, and water colors. Subjects include Abraham Lincoln, the founding of Newark, Valentine's Day, nature, and the poetry of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The "Chemistry-Physics, High School" volume contains detailed lab reports accompanied by drawings, charts, and graphs, on experiments. The 4th year chemistry class at Newark High School, taught by William Weiner, had 128 students; the 3rd year physics class had 80 students. NOTE: This volume is fragile; consult staff for access.

Academy of Arts: Guidebook listing faculty, giving a brief history of the school, and detailing the curriculum [n.d.--1940s?]

Barringer High School: 3 volumes the Newark High School Annual, with student essays and poetry, athletic news, lists of students, and lists of alumni in college with the name of the college attended (1879, 1896, 1898); a program from the 10th anniversary of the NHS class of 1898 with biographical sketches of each graduate (1908); a Newark High School "certificate of merit" from 1879; and a Barringer handbook issued by the Girls' League (ca. 1929), issues of The Acropolis from 1901-1945. Boarding and Day School for Young Ladies: "Course of Study and Expenses" (1870s).

Brower Industrial School: minutes of monthly meetings of the trustees, all of whom were women, with financial reports, information on programs, and clippings of newspaper articles regarding the school (1899-1917) .

Cleveland School: a letter from Lady Bird Johnson to Dr. Mildred Groder of the Newark Board of Education after Mrs. Johnson visited a Head Start at Cleveland Elementary School; invite for dedication of school (1913)

Craven's School: a bulletin for Miss Craven's School (1906-1907)

Essex County Hospital School: commencement flier (1913)

Garfield: Guestbook of 1996 Garfield School 50th reunion. Barron Castle, 1943 autograph book, scrapbook pages (mostly class of 1946, copies 1937-1996).

Green Street [German American] School: alumni material including a concert program, constitution, meeting announcement, etc. (1891-1904); a bulletin (1895), and a 50th anniversary souvenir program for the Newarker Schul-Vereins (1906), both in German; a a 50th anniversary souvenir program for the Newarker Schul-Verein, in German (1906).

Miller Street: "The Orthophrast," a student magazine of the Miller Street School (1930s).

Newark Academy: Newark Academy material consists of a pamphlet for the "Young Ladies' Department under the Care of the Rev. Prospect Hill Country Day School material includes; 2 volumes of "The Aster," a yearbook (1925, 1926) an index of graduates from 1888-1972; brochures, etc.

Misc/Multiple School (2 folders by date): includes articles on school history, a draft report regarding "German Language in [Newark] Public Schools" (c. 1880s); "Inter-Scholastic School News," Vol. 2, no. 1, published "in the interests of the Grammar Schools of the City of Newark" (with honor rolls, faculty news, advertisements, etc., 1909); Newark School Nurse Annual Report 1945-1946 (donated by W. Dale Clark Main Library, Omaha NE); "Title I News"; copies of clippings from the Star-Ledger, the New Jersey Afro-American, etc. compiled by the Central Parents Council (1970s); "Curriculum Notes" (1971-1972); and assorted fliers, etc (1970s-2001). Box 7 (oversized objects box): Three cross-country championship medals, won by Robert Hanlon of Central High School, (1934-1935); Two Central High School class rings, (1929, 1936); Souvenir saucer from a 25th reunion of Central High School, (1961); Sunday School medal presented to Emma G. Laiser by the Church of the Redeemer, (1895-1897), Barringer High school reunion buttons, Ted Wagner And Mildred Wagner /Coburn / Keller, 20th reunion, (1956); Lafayette Street School Save the playground button, (2017); Barringer High School basketball charms, (1924-1926).

Separated on shelf: Volume entitled "Record of Applications for Admission to Training School" with names and addresses of applicants (all women), date of application; "date of admission as pupil or reason for refusal," and date of termination. Many applicants were from Newark, New Jersey at large, and New York City, but addresses of applicants range from Virginia to Canada (1885-1903).
