New Jersey TV, Hilda on Rage in America: Voices from Newark (5/14/1992), 1992

 Item — Box: OV_SZ 2

Scope and Contents

Rage in America: Voices from Newark gathered many of the city’s leaders to discuss the possibility of a riot occurring in Newark following the Rodney King beating and the Los Angeles Riots. The discussion was moderated by Sandra King and participants included Mayor Sharpe James, Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura, former Mayor Kenneth Gibson, and Dr. Hilda Hidalgo. Discussion topics included crime, police brutality, racism, and the 1967 Newark Riots. Dr. Hidalgo commented that not much has changed since the 1967 Riots because the education system was failing its students, the city faced an unaddressed AIDS epidemic, and unemployment rates were high. She added that there was a continued presence of racism against new groups that moved into the city and were excluded from political participation.
