Hispanic Political Empowerment Part 2 (TRT: 29:35), 1992

 Item — Box: OV_SZ 2

Scope and Contents

Hosted by Darnes Tavaras, Hispanic Political Empowerment discussed whether Hispanics were able join the political process in the United States and if there were cultural characteristics that impeded their participation. Hilda Hidalgo argued that the political process was not responsive to the needs of the Latino community and that they were alienated as a result. When there was political inclusion, such as running Latino candidates for office, political participation by the Hispanic community increased. Dr. Hidalgo added that the political reality was that the wealthy population participated in politics more easily and most Hispanics were not wealthy. She recommended that the Latino community create organizations which foster leaders so that more Latinos might participate in the political process.
