 File — Box: 9, Folder: 8

Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

This subseries documents the Experimental Master of Social Work for Bilingual/Bicultural Hispanics Program at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. This program was co-created by Dr. Hidalgo and Joan McEniry, with the aid of several other Rutgers’ faculty members. The purpose of creating this program was to create a group of accredited social workers who could effectively serve New Jersey’s bilingual and Spanish dominant communities, which were dramatically underserved. The program was nominally part of Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work; however, it was located on a different campus, was run by a dedicated faculty, and was funded through external donations instead of through the university. The initial program proposal, written by Dr. Hidalgo and Joan McEniry, and the final program proposal, written by Dr. Hidalgo and Harold Demone, Dean of the Graduate School of Social Work, are both located in this subseries. The means by which this program was funded is documented both by funding proposals written to large financial donors, a speech delivered by Dr. Hidalgo to the National Network for Grant Makers, and correspondence documenting program funding from private donors. The remainder of documents in this subseries are a number of program evaluations, conducted for accreditation from the Council for Social Work Education [C.S.W.E.], for an external review committee, and for an internal review of the program. These documents include strategies for the planning and implementation of the program according to established best practices, the teaching modules used to instruct the students, overall program design plans, bibliographies of required reading, internal correspondence discussing how best to evaluate the program, and reviews from external committees. In addition to the records, 309 photographs of the students and faculty involved in this program are also included in this subseries. A recording on VHS of Module 13 from this program is located in Series V: Media. For additional documentation on this program, see also the Marcos Leiderman, PhD and María Canino, EdD – Papers.
