Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

This subseries contains pieces written by Dr. Hidalgo for the purposes of presenting them in spoken form to an audience; their unifying characteristic is that they were written to serve as an outline or guide for an oral presentation. The types of forums in which these speeches and addresses were given varied in type, purpose and setting. The most common are academic conferences in which Dr. Hidalgo presented her work to an audience of other scholars and academics; other venues include gatherings where Dr. Hidalgo would advocate for civil rights, generally for the Puerto Rican and Latino community, the LGBT community, and for women. She also gave speeches advocating for children as an accredited social worker, as well as stressing the importance of improving educational services in that same capacity. Many of the speeches and conference presentations contain extensive marginalia and in text annotations indicating the necessary flexibility and changes Dr. Hidalgo had to make when delivering them. Additionally, the intended oral nature of these documents leads to certain similarities and repurposing of specific passages and anecdotes; a notable example of this is the various instances in which Dr. Hidalgo describes the stages of “coming out” as a lesbian or gay man. Of particular note is a copy of the speech Dr. Hidalgo gave at the National Puerto Rican March for Justice in Washington D.C. This subseries is arranged in chronological order.
