Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 4 scrapbooks of material relating to the Newark Board of Education and to individual schools in Newark. The contents are as follows:

Scrapbooks 1 (1923-1925) and 2 (1925-1934): arranged in chronological order, contain local newspaper clippings related to issues, events, activities, and announcements of individual schools, and of the Newark Board of Education. Topics include, but are not limited to, the suitability of hiring married women as teachers (ca. 1923); budgets; salaries; appointments of school board members, principals, and staff; and construction projects.

Scrapbooks 3 and 4: include photographs and a few renderings or sketches of schools, or additions to schools, under construction. Subjects of these include workers; exterior images, with some close-ups of architectural details; and interior images, including classrooms, labs, gymnasiums, auditoriums, kitchens, refectories, etc. Some images include students and teachers. Most of the photographs are 4" x 6", 6" x 8", or 7" x 9"; are sepia-toned; and appear to have been taken by professional photographers. Many of the construction photographs are dated.
