Scope and Contents

Many of the photos appear to be taken at Weequahic High School, Poeschl's workplace.

Additionally, it appears that some of the photos may be from Poeschl's 1969 photography exhibit of the Central Ward.

Many of the photos feature Poeschl, including some of his music classes and other musical performances.

There are also photos of musicians including Rashaan Kirk and Miles Davis.

The full collection also contains some vacation photos, not all of which have been made public, as well as many unidentified portraits.

Biographical / Historical

BOB POESCHL

Poeschl (1936-2004) was born in New York City and graduated from Lodi High School, class of 1954.

He was music director at Rutherford High School. In 1968, he wrote "Jazz Suite for Life" which was performed at Rutherford Unitarian Church, with poetry by Raymond Moody of Newark's Central Ward.

He taught as a music teacher at Weequahic from at least 1969 through 1979. In 1969, there was an exhibit of his Central Ward photos at United Community Corp. In 1970, he took part in Operation We Care, working with students during the Teacher's Strike. In 1971 he helped organizea "Strike Benefits" concert at Weequahic to support the teacher's strike.

He also played in various bands and music groups.

Poeschl died in North Carolina.

ROBERT I REID

Reid (1926-2004) was an art director including founding the ReMar Studio in Hackensack. He also played in various bands and music groups.

    Abstract

    This collection of photos is related to music teacher, Bob Poeschl. He is featured in many of the photos, however, that photographer is unknown.

    Immediate Source of Acquisition

    Furnish Green Gallery acquired the estate of Robert I Reid and his brother. Upon looking at these photos they realized many of the photos showed Bob Poeschl, a Weequahic teacher. Furnish Green donated the photos to be scanned, they were then returned.
