Biographical / Historical
The Newark Water Coalition was organized in 2018 response to a water crisis in Newark where lead was discovered in Newark's water. The co-founders included Anthony Diaz, Jaden Smith and Drew Fitzgerald. Their work over the years has included protests, organizing and giving out clean water. Their mission as expressed on their website (2023) is as follows, "The Newark Water Coalition acknowledges that Water, Housing, and Food is a human right. Our intention is to cultivate a self-determined local, national, and international community of people who recognize the connection between systemic environmental racism and capitalism. NWC fights to liberate natural resources whether it be food, land, air or water as sources of life for all". The Newark Water Coalition is distinct but somewhat overlapping with the Newark Water Group, which did a lot of work around the corruption in the Newark Watershed Conservation and Development Corporation and starting in the early 2000s.
