Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 405 35mm film negatives and 12 contact sheets containing 408 images. Journalist Richard Conniff took the images in August of 1970 while his father, James C.G. Conniff, was working with the Guild. The photographs include clients, staff, and clergy of the Mount Carmel Guild. The images also feature Mount Carmel Guild’s work with disabled youth and were likely used in brochures. Mark Conniff, Richard Conniff’s brother, modeled for some of the photographs (contact sheet #44).

Biographical / Historical

The Mount Carmel Guild was founded in 1903 as the Catholic Children’s Aid Society. The society became the Associated Catholic Charities and provided welfare services to families and children. By 1929, it was officially established as the Newark Mount Carmel Guild. Today the Guild serves Essex County families and children with a wide range of services including counseling, emergency shelter, psychiatric services, affordable housing, immigration legal services, and adoption services.

Richard Conniff (1951 - ), is a journalist and non-fiction author. Most of his works focus on wildlife and sciences. Conniff has published in National Geographic, Scientific American, and The Smithsonian, among many others.

James C.G. Conniff (1920-2013), was an author and professor. Along with his son Richard, he co-authored The Energy People: A History of PSEG. Conniff published seven books along with numerous articles in a variety of publications including New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated and The Saturday Evening Post.
