New Jersey Land Conveyances Records
Scope and Contents
This collection consist of 63 folders, each of which contains a document, or occasionally documents, related to land conveyances, including boundary line settlements, quit claim indentures and releases, bonds, etc. The folders are arranged chronologically.
The bulk of the material relates to property transactions that occurred in Essex County; Newark related material includes, but is not limited to:
An indenture for the sale of property in Newark from David Ward to Joseph and Benjamin Mun (1764)
An indenture for the purchase of salt meadow property from Joseph Mun to Benjamin Mun (1765)
A bond to be held by William Burnet of Newark, for John Wiley of Newark, and Mathias Halsted of Perth Amboy (1792)
An indenture between Elizabeth Pierson and Sarah Brant, both of Newark who were the executors of the estate of Abraham Lyon, and Obidiah Meeker of Elizabeth Town, for the sale of property to Meeker (1797)
An indenture between Timothy and Charlotte Williams, both of Newark, and David Munn, of Newark, for the sale of property to Munn (1803)
An indenture between Elias and Phebe Crane, both of Newark, and Moses Ogden for the sale of property in Elizabeth Town to Ogden (1804)
An indenture between Seth and Sally Woodruff, both of Newark, and Elihu Bond for the sale of land (1810)
An indenture between Obadiah and Comfort Meeker, both of Newark, and William Burdge, for the sale of property on Broad Street to Burdge; a hand drawn map of the property is included in the folder (1811)
A document authorizing Lewis Thibou of Newark, guardian of John and Jabez Nance, to sell house and property of Edward Nance, deceased (1814)

An acknowledgment of tenancy at will stating that Eliza Field has relinquished property in Newark to Obadiah Meeker, but will remain a tenant of the property (1817)
An indenture between Caleb and Rhoda Hedden, and Stephen and Sally Hedden, both of Newark, and Elizabeth Ball, of Newark for the sale of property to Ball (1818)

A decision by New Jersey Court of Chancery, as relayed to the Sheriff of Essex County, that Newark property of defendants, Aaron Spinning (husband of Prudens Alling) and Jonathan Spinning, must be sold to pay the complainant, John Teunis (1836)
An indenture between Elias T. Mount, and Elihu L. Green, both of Newark, for the sale of a tract of land in Newark to Green (1850)
An indenture between Henry Meeker and Obadiah Meeker, both of Clinton Township of Essex County, for the sale of property in Clinton Township to Henry Meeker (1852)
A quit claim from Andrew Anderson et al. that releases property in Clinton Township to Henry Meeker, executor of the estate of Obadiah Meeker, of Clinton Township (1870)
Property records, tax receipts, etc. relating to tracts of land in Clinton Township purchased by John Gornott, and his wife Mary, from Susan Baldwin, widow of Theodore N. Baldwin, and from Eliza Tillou, widow of Charles Tillou (1858-1897)
An indenture between William C. Whitney, and his wife Anna L., for the sale of property in Newark to Emmons T. Mockridge (1878)
Land conveyance (1789) Michael Osborn to Joseph Javis Elizabethtown for 6 pounds, 1 shilling, 10 pence (witnesses: Wheeler Wade, Betty Osborn, Sarah Osborn)
Also included is one folder containing a map of Vailsburg, created in 2001 by Charles T. McGrath, Jr., indicating the owners of various parcels of land in Vailsburg in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
