New Jersey Churches Scrapbook

 Collection — Container: Volume 1
Identifier: MG NJ Churches SB-(Main)

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a scrapbook of newspaper clippings related to churches in New Jersey, with a few on churches outside the state. An inscription at the start of the volume, "Ex Libris Nova Caesarea Chapter Newark New Jersey Organized April 15, 1891," indicates that it once belonged to the Nova Caesarea [New Jersey] Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). A letter dated March 1938 states that it was compiled by Helen S. Tennyson in memory of Grace L. Ward. The volume is indexed.

The clippings, mostly from the Newark Sunday Call, date from 1900 to 1938; most are from 1930s. Newark churches documented include: South Park Church; Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Church; First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church; Central Presbyterian Church; Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church; Saint John's Lutheran Church; First Methodist Protestant Church; House of Prayer (Episcopal); Saint James's Episcopal Church; Saint Paul's Episcopal Church; Park Presbyterian Chapel; Saint James's Roman Catholic Church; Second Presbyterian Church; Saint Michael's Church (St. John's Cemetery); Grace Episcopal Church; Saint John's Ukrainian Catholic Church; Saint Barnabas Church; Old First Presbyterian Church; Trinity Cathedral; St. Stephen's Episcopal Church; Episcopal Church of Saint Mary Magdalene; Third German Presbyterian Church; First Evangelical; First Methodist Protestant; Central Avenue Presbyterian; Saint Stephen's German United Evangelical Church; High Street Presbyterian Church; Sixth Presbyterian Church; Wolff Memorial Presbyterian Church; Third Presbyterian Church; Universalist Church; West Presbyterian Church; Roseville Methodist Episcopal Church; Weequahic Presbyterian Church; and Sacred Heart Cathedral.
